Full Time, Exempt
Reports to: Chief Financial & Operations Officer


Direct Reports: Accounting Staff (e.g., Financial Services & Data Analyst, contract bookkeeper)

The Music Hall (TMH) has just completed a period of significant expansion, with revenues growing from $6.1M to a projected $15.3M in FY26, alongside new venues and the stewardship of additional historic assets. As TMH enters a phase focused on stabilization and long-term sustainability, the Director of Finance & Administration will be a key strategic partner to the CFOO and leadership team—strengthening financial stewardship, refining scalable systems, and supporting data-driven decision-making across venues, festivals, and programs.

 

POSITION SUMMARY

 

The Director of Finance & Administration provides leadership and oversight for The Music Hall’s finance and human resources functions. This position manages day-to-day accounting operations, financial reporting, annual audit preparation, budgeting, and cash flow management, while also overseeing employee benefits, performance management processes, and workplace policies. The role supports a healthy, equitable, and high-performing workplace culture.

 

ESSENTIALS DUTIES AND REPONSIBILITIES

 

Financial Leadership & Oversight

 

  • Lead all accounting operations including general ledger, accounts payable/receivable, payroll, and monthly close.

  • Prepare timely and accurate financial statements, budget-to-actual reports, and cash flow forecasts for leadership and board committees.

  • Manage the annual budgeting process in coordination with the CFOO and department heads.

  • Oversee annual audit preparation, ensuring compliance with GAAP and nonprofit financial standards.

  • Monitor internal controls and ensure compliance with local, state, and federal financial regulations.

  • Serve as staff liaison to the Finance Committee—prepare materials, track KPIs, and maintain clear communication.

  • Supervise accounting staff and ensure collaboration across teams on reporting, campaign tracking, and analysis.

  • Automate and streamline monthly close, reporting, forecasting, and board packet preparation using modern tools and AI-assisted workflows.

 

Human Resources Administration

 

  • Oversee all benefit programs including health, dental, vision, 401(k), parking, and cell phone stipends.

  • Manage annual performance review processes aligned with organizational values.

  • Partner with leadership on conflict resilience, employee coaching, and resolution of personnel matters.

  • Maintain updated job descriptions, personnel files, and compliance with employment laws.

  • Administer compensation benchmarking and pay adjustments in coordination with the CFOO and CEO.

  • Coordinate with external HR and benefits providers for renewals, compliance filings, and employee communications.

 

Organizational & Administrative Leadership

 

  • Support strategic financial modeling and long-range planning with the CFOO.

  • Contribute to a positive, inclusive, and collaborative workplace culture.

  • Participate in cross-departmental planning and process improvement initiatives.

 

QUALIFICATIONS

 

  • Bachelor’s in Accounting, Finance, or Business; CPA or MBA preferred.

  • 7+ years progressive accounting and finance experience, nonprofit strongly preferred.

  • Demonstrated ownership of monthly close, audit preparation, budgeting, and cash management.

  • Experience in HR administration including benefits, performance management, and compliance.

  • Strong systems mindset with experience implementing automation or AI-supported workflows.

  • Excellent communication skills, able to translate financial information for varied audiences.

  • Leadership style aligned with TMH’s values and culture.

 

Highly Desirable: Technology, Data & AI Aptitude

 

  • Experience automating repeatable finance/HR workflows such as AP, reconciliations, and audit preparation.

  • Use of AI tools to draft financial narratives, summarize variances, reconcile data, or detect anomalies.

  • Ability to build dashboards and visual reports for leadership and Board use.

  • Strong commitment to data hygiene, internal controls, and system documentation.

  • Proficiency with QuickBooks Online, payroll/HRIS systems, and Google Workspace; BI/reporting tools a plus.

 

WORK ENVIRONMENT

 

Onsite in Portsmouth, NH, with limited hybrid flexibility. Occasional evenings or weekends required for meetings or special events.

 

SALARY & BENEFITS

 

Competitive salary based on experience and performance. Base range: $85,000–$105,000 plus semi-annual bonuses. Includes comprehensive benefits: health, dental, paid time off, parking, and 401(k).
