Job Description
Chief Operating Officer
Holocaust Museum Boston
Holocaust Museum Boston is preparing to open in late 2026 as New England’s first and only museum dedicated exclusively to Holocaust education. Located in downtown Boston across from the Freedom Trail and the Massachusetts State House, the Museum is being developed as a defining cultural and educational institution for the region. Through immersive exhibitions, survivor testimony, and innovative educational programming, the Museum will examine the consequences of antisemitism, hatred, and indifference while elevating stories of human dignity, moral courage, resilience, and choice.
As the signature project of the Holocaust Legacy Foundation, Holocaust Museum Boston represents a $110 million capital initiative supported by individual, corporate, foundation, and state partners. The Museum is intentionally forward-looking in its approach, challenging visitors not only to understand what happened during the Holocaust, but to reflect on why it matters now. Grounded in the belief that preserving historical truth is essential to protecting democratic values and strengthening empathy, the Museum is designed to serve diverse audiences across generations through state-of-the-art galleries, classrooms, and community spaces.
The Opportunity
Holocaust Museum Boston seeks an inaugural Chief Operating Officer to serve as the organization’s chief administrative and operational leader during a first-time museum opening.
Reporting to the President and CEO, the COO will play a central role in translating vision into execution, building and operationalizing the systems, teams, and infrastructure required for a successful soft launch in October 2026 and public opening later in the year. This is a rare opportunity to shape how a major cultural institution functions from day one, with responsibility spanning facilities and building operations, security, technology, visitor experience, admissions, events space, exhibits and exhibit maintenance, and volunteer operations.
As a key member of the senior leadership team, the COO will unite staff, vendors, and external partners to ensure the Museum opens on time, operates safely and efficiently, and delivers a high-quality, mission-aligned visitor experience. The role combines strategic planning with hands-on leadership, requiring comfort in a fast-paced launch environment and the ability to build systems, policies, and standard operating procedures that support long-term sustainability. The COO will also oversee outsourced finance, human resources, and legal partners, ensuring strong internal controls, regulatory compliance, and clear Board-level reporting.
For an experienced operational leader drawn to mission-driven work and institutional start-ups, this is a moment of opportunity to help bring a landmark museum to life.
The salary range for this position is $160,000–$190,000.
