Nonprofit Chief Financial & Operating Officer (Hybrid CFO/COO)

Hybrid | Linthicum, MD area preferred | $140,000-$150,000

Join a team that makes a difference in the lives of children and teens in the US foster care system!

The National Adoption Association (NAA) is seeking a Chief Financial & Operating Officer (CFOO) to join its senior leadership team. This hybrid CFO/COO role is a unique opportunity for an experienced nonprofit finance executive to help strengthen NAA's financial sustainability while also building the operational infrastructure needed to support growth, increasing complexity, and long-term impact.

Reporting to the CEO, the CFOO serves as NAA's lead executive for financial strategy, stewardship, and sustainability, with responsibility for budgeting, forecasting, compliance, audit oversight, reporting, and risk management across the organization. The CFOO also oversees core business operations, including systems, data, human resources, and facilities, and serves as a strategic partner who connects financial discipline with operational execution.

About NAA

The National Adoption Association (NAA) is the national leader in advancing best practices in adoption from foster care. We work to strengthen practice, remove barriers, and support the professionals, families, and systems serving children and youth who wait. As NAA continues to evolve, this role will help ensure that the organization's financial and operational foundation keeps pace with its mission and strategic priorities.

What You'll Lead

  • Financial strategy, planning, budgeting, forecasting, and cash flow management

  • Audit, compliance, internal controls, and risk management

  • Financial oversight across grants, diversified revenue streams, and evolving business models

  • Business operations that support consistency, scalability, and financial sustainability

  • Ownership of internal systems, data, workflows, and operational infrastructure

  • Oversight of HR, facilities, and administrative operations

  • Strategic partnership with the CEO, Board, and senior leaders on organizational decisions and future growth

This role is well suited for a leader who is excited by both stewardship and building: someone who can protect the financial health of the organization while improving the systems, structure, and business operations that support scale.

What You'll Bring

  • Bachelor's degree in Accounting or Finance required; CPA and/or MBA strongly preferred

  • At least 10 years of progressive accounting and financial management experience

  • At least 5 years in a senior financial leadership role such as CFO, VP of Finance, or Director of Finance

  • Strong nonprofit financial management experience, including fund accounting, grants, audits, compliance, and reporting

  • Experience managing complexity across multiple revenue streams

  • Experience building or improving business operations, systems, or organizational infrastructure

  • Ability to communicate clearly with boards, executive leaders, and non-financial staff

  • Sound judgment, collaborative leadership, and a practical, solution-oriented mindset

Why Join NAA

At NAA, your work will directly support a mission that changes lives. You will join a dedicated team committed to improving outcomes for children, youth, and families. In addition to a meaningful role and competitive salary, NAA offers a generous benefits package that includes a gold health plan, dental and vision insurance that is 100% employer-paid for employees, employer retirement contributions, and professional development opportunities.

Additional Information

The ideal candidate will live in or around the Linthicum, Maryland area. This role requires occasional evenings and weekends and travel approximately three to five times per year for team meetings, events, and other organizational needs.
