Fraser Valley Community Media (FVCM), doing business as KFFR 88.3 FM, is a nonprofit community media organization dedicated to serving the residents of Grand County, Colorado through independent, locally focused radio programming and community engagement. As the region’s community media hub, FVCM provides trusted local news, information, music, and public affairs programming while fostering civic participation and strengthening community connections.

The next Executive Director will build upon this momentum while leading the organization toward continued financial sustainability and growth beyond $500,000 in annual revenue.

 

Position Summary

 

The Executive Director serves as the chief executive officer of Fraser Valley Community Media and is responsible for advancing the organization’s mission through strategic leadership, fundraising, organizational management, and community engagement. Reporting to the Board of Directors, the Executive Director provides vision and leadership that ensures the organization’s long-term financial sustainability while preserving its commitment to serving the diverse communities of Grand County through independent local media.

Essential Responsibilities

 

Strategic Leadership

 

  • Provide strategic leadership for Fraser Valley Community Media.

  • Implement the strategic vision established by the Board of Directors.

  • Advise the Board on policy decisions and implement approved policies and strategic initiatives.

  • Collaborate with staff and Board leadership to guide organizational growth and long-term sustainability.

  • Work with other established community radio stations to learn and implement industry best practices.

 

Fundraising & Development

 

  • Serve as the organization’s chief development officer.

  • Lead all fundraising efforts, including: 1) Underwriting solicitation; 2) Membership campaigns; 3) Annual fund drives; 4) Major donor cultivation; 5) Grant identification, writing, and management; 6) Capital campaigns; 7) Planned giving initiatives; 8) Donor stewardship and recognition programs; and 9) Special fundraising events

  • Build and strengthen relationships with foundations, corporations, community partners, and philanthropic supporters.

  • Support underwriting growth in partnership with the Underwriting & Marketing Director.

 

Financial & Operational Management

 

  • Develop annual operating budgets and long-range financial plans in collaboration with the Finance Committee.

  • Provide oversight of: 1) Administrative operations; 2) Budget management; 3) Grant management; 4) Contract administration; 5) Records management; 6) Personnel management; 7) Employee evaluation and development

  • Work closely with the bookkeeper to maintain accurate financial records that support informed decision-making and long-term sustainability.

  • Provide regular financial reports to the Board of Directors.

  • Ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and sound fiscal management practices.

 

Organizational Leadership

 

  • Supervise professional staff while fostering a collaborative, inclusive, and mission-driven organizational culture.

  • Recruit, mentor, evaluate, and develop staff.

  • Promote effective communication and teamwork across staff and volunteers.

  • Support and engage more than 70 volunteers who contribute to the station’s success.

 

Governance & Board Relations

 

  • Serve as the primary liaison to the Board of Directors.

  • Coordinate Board meetings, including: 1) Meeting scheduling; 2) Agenda development; 3) Preparation of requested materials; and 4) Virtual or in-person meeting logistics

  • Provide the Board with timely financial and operational information necessary for informed decision-making.

  • Support Board committees and strategic planning initiatives.

 

Community Engagement

 

  • Serve as the primary ambassador for Fraser Valley Community Media.

  • Articulate the organization’s mission, vision, policies, and strategic direction.

  • Build and maintain strong relationships with: 1) Community leaders; 2) Local governments; 3) Community organizations; 4) Advisory boards; 5) Listeners; 6) Members; 7) Donors; 8) Underwriters; 9) Volunteers; 10) Broadcasters; 11) Staff; and 12) Other key stakeholders

  • Strengthen the organization’s visibility and reputation throughout Grand County.

 

Compliance & Regulatory Oversight

 

  • Ensure compliance with: 1) Federal nonprofit regulations; 2) FCC requirements; 3) Grant reporting requirements; and 4) State and local regulatory requirements

  • Complete all required reporting for applicable federal, state, and local agencies.

 

Qualifications

 

The ideal candidate will possess:

 

  • Demonstrated nonprofit executive or senior leadership experience.

  • Proven success leading fundraising and development initiatives.

  • Experience writing and managing grants.

  • Experience cultivating and stewarding major donors.

  • Strong budget development and financial management experience.

  • Experience supervising and developing professional staff.

  • Strategic planning and organizational leadership experience.

  • Outstanding written, verbal, and presentation communication skills.

  • Exceptional relationship-building and stakeholder engagement abilities.

  • Strong organizational and project management skills.

  • Understanding of public radio programming principles and best practices.

 

Preferred Qualifications

 

  • Experience in a management or supervisory role within a nonprofit organization.

  • Experience in public radio or community-based media is preferred but not required.

  • Candidates from nonprofit leadership, higher education, museums, performing arts, journalism, foundations, or community development are strongly encouraged to apply.

 

Anticipated Allocation of Responsibilities

 

  • Fundraising, Development, Grants & Major Gifts: 40%

  • Organizational Vision & Mission Leadership: 30%

  • Board Relations & Strategic Planning: 15%

  • Community Partnerships: 10%

  • Administration & Financial Oversight: 5%

 

Measures of Success

 

Within the first three years, the Executive Director will work collaboratively with the Board and staff to:

 

  • Grow annual organizational revenue beyond $500,000.

  • Expand membership support.

  • Increase grant funding.

  • Strengthen municipal partnerships.

  • Grow major donor giving.

  • Expand community programming.

  • Support development of additional broadcast infrastructure.

  • Increase organizational financial reserves.

 

Performance will be evaluated annually based on organizational outcomes, fundraising performance, strategic initiatives, financial stewardship, and leadership effectiveness.

 

Compensation & Benefits

 

Salary: $75,000–$90,000 annually, commensurate with experience.
