Position Description

 

The Director of Finance and Operations is a key member of ABF’s senior leadership team, providing strategic leadership and hands on ownership across financial management, operations, human resources, information technology, and grant administration functions. This role combines high level leadership with direct responsibility for completing core financial and operational work.

 

This position provides leadership and accountability for outsourced operational partners while also personally managing key processes and deliverables. The Director of Finance and Operations plays a central role in maintaining a compliant, efficient, and engaging organizational environment supported by strong systems and practices. This position provides leadership and accountability for outsourced operational partners while also personally managing key processes and deliverables. Serving as ABF’s primary internal financial leader, this role ensures sound fiscal stewardship, strong internal controls, and accurate, timely financial reporting. The role also manages the administrative and financial aspects of ABF’s grant programs, ensuring adherence to funder requirements and accurate tracking and disbursement of funds.

 

Position Responsibilities

 

Financial Management

 

  • Serve as the primary internal financial leader for ABF, with direct responsibility for accounting operations, financial reporting, budgeting, forecasting, and coordination of audit and Form 990 preparation.

  • Prepare financial reports, maintain financial records, and complete core accounting and finance processes on a regular basis.

  • Work closely with the outsourced accounting firm while retaining ownership of accuracy, timeliness, and quality across all financial activities.

  • Develop the annual operating budget and multi year financial projections.

  • Prepare and present monthly, quarterly, and annual financial reports for the Executive Director, Finance Committee, and Board of Directors.

  • Monitor internal controls and ensure compliance with nonprofit accounting standards and regulatory requirements.

  • Manage cash flow, restricted funds, and investment tracking in coordination with external partners.

 

Human Resources Oversight

 

  • Serve as the internal point of contact for people operations and work directly with the outsourced HR partner.

  • Ensure organizational compliance with federal and state employment laws in partnership with the HR provider.

  • Support recruitment, hiring, onboarding, offboarding, and performance processes.

  • Ensure HR policies, procedures, and employee handbooks remain updated and aligned with best practices.

  • Support culture building and employee engagement initiatives in collaboration with leadership.

 

Information Technology Oversight

 

  • Manage the relationship with the outsourced IT provider to support secure and reliable technology systems.

  • Support effective practices related to IT policies, cybersecurity protocols, systems access, and software tools.

  • Identify opportunities to improve technology tools and workflows to support staff efficiency and collaboration.

 

Grant Administration

 

  • Manage administrative processes for ABF grant programs, ensuring accuracy, compliance with funder requirements, and timely disbursement of funds.

  • Partner with program staff on grant agreements, reporting requirements, and tracking of funds.

  • Maintain documentation and support audits or reporting tied to funded research and grantmaking.

 

Operations and Administration

 

  • Maintain organizational policies, procedures, and internal systems to ensure smooth day to day operations.

  • Provide operational and governance support to the Executive Director, including board materials, governance documentation, and committee coordination as needed.

  • Lead operational planning and contribute to strategic initiatives that strengthen ABF’s infrastructure.

  • Identify risks, gaps, and opportunities for operational improvement and take action to address them.

 

Knowledge, Skills and Abilities

 

QUALIFICATIONS -

 

  • Bachelor’s degree in accounting, finance, business administration, or related field required.

  • CPA or equivalent nonprofit financial leadership experience strongly preferred.

  • Minimum 7 to 10 years of progressive experience in finance, operations, or nonprofit administration required.

  • Demonstrated experience performing hands on financial and operational work.

  • Experience working with outsourced accounting, HR, and IT partners.

  • Strong understanding of nonprofit accounting, compliance, and grants management required.

  • Excellent analytical, organizational, and communication skills.

  • Proven ability to work effectively as a key member of a collaborative senior leadership team.

  • Experience working in a fully remote organization preferred.

  • Demonstrates flexibility and the ability to adapt to evolving priorities and opportunities. High level of integrity, discretion, and commitment to ABF’s mission.
