Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism (UAF)


Location: Remote — United States
Salary: $165,845
Employment: Full-Time, Permanent, Exempt
Schedule: 36 hours per week / 4-day workweek
Reports To: Executive Director
Supervises: One staff member plus vendors and consultants
Travel: Approximately 15% domestic and international travel

 

The Organization

 

For more than 25 years, Urgent Action Fund for Feminist Activism has supported feminist activists working to keep themselves and their communities safe while building resilient movements for justice, equity, and liberation.

 

UAF provides fast, flexible support to women, trans, non-binary, and LGBTQ frontline activists responding to unexpected risks and opportunities. Its mission is to sustain feminist activism worldwide through rapid-response funding and support.

 

UAF works collaboratively with independent Sister Funds in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia and the Pacific, creating a global network supporting feminist movements across regions.

 

The Opportunity

 

UAF seeks an experienced, equity-driven philanthropy leader to serve as Director of Finance and Administration (DFA). Reporting to the Executive Director, the DFA is a senior leader who works across the organization and with UAF’s global network of Sister Funds.

 

The DFA oversees a $15 million budget and is responsible for strategic financial oversight, revenue and expense allocation, payments, payroll oversight, compliance, internal controls, finance staff, and external accounting and investment firms.

 

The DFA will lead budgeting, forecasting, revenue allocation, financial reporting, and compliance while helping UAF navigate complex regulatory requirements and multiple government and funder audits. The position is a member of the Management Team and supervises the Finance and Administration Officer while overseeing an external accounting firm.

 

Core Responsibilities

 

Revenue Management — Approximately 40%

 

  • Oversee revenue tracking, allocation, and compliance for approximately 35 restricted revenue streams.

  • Manage budgeting, award processing, disbursement, post-award monitoring, and closeout.

  • Partner with Programs and Partnerships teams to create budgets and maintain effective revenue allocation and tracking systems.

  • Ensure compliance with donor restrictions and external regulatory requirements.

  • Manage complex compliance obligations, including at least four annual Canadian and European government audits and funder-specific reporting requirements.

  • Identify financial and compliance risks and implement appropriate internal controls.

 

Strategic Finance — Approximately 35%

 

  • Oversee financial planning, management, forecasting, scenario planning, and reporting.

  • Partner with Programs and Partnerships leadership to develop sustainable revenue and expenditure strategies.

  • Provide timely financial analysis, projections, and strategic guidance.

  • Develop the organization’s annual budget.

  • Oversee accurate accounting for accounts receivable, accounts payable, restricted funds, and releases.

  • Direct investment strategy and manage banking relationships.

  • Coordinate preparation of audit materials and oversee reviews of draft audits and Form 990s.

  • Serve as the financial representative with consortium partners.

  • Oversee financial reporting to 20+ funders annually, including government funding sources.

  • Provide financial reporting and documentation to consortium partners.

  • Partner with the Board Treasurer to provide regular reports to the Finance and Audit Committees.

  • Present the annual budget and midyear budget revision to the Board.

  • Strengthen financial systems and software, including expense reporting and budget development.

  • Develop revenue and expense tracking SOPs and processes.

  • Collaborate with the Director of People, Culture & Operations to streamline payroll, benefits, and other internal processes.

 

Coordination and Collaboration — Approximately 25%

 

  • Coordinate with UAF Sister Funds in Africa, Latin America and the Caribbean, and Asia and the Pacific.

  • Collaborate across multiple time zones to develop projections, track income, produce financial reports, and create shared financial systems.

  • Serve as a member of the Management Team and provide regular financial updates.

  • Collaborate with other Directors on staff-facing projects, presentations, and organization-wide leadership decisions.

  • Identify and resolve cross-team strategic and operational issues.

  • Partner with Programs and Partnerships on financial reporting and monitoring for incoming grants.

  • Partner with People, Culture & Operations on salary and benefits administration.

 

2026–2027 Priorities

 

  • Lead the continued evolution of the Finance team, including its roles, responsibilities, workflows, and infrastructure.

  • Streamline allocation of restricted and unrestricted funds to the approved annual budget.

  • Create the annual budget and lead the organization-wide budgeting process.

  • Establish protocols for allocating new revenue to personnel and overhead.

  • Strengthen grant tracking and financial reporting systems in partnership with Programs and Partnerships.

  • Improve information and communication flows related to grant tracking and funder reporting.

  • Partner with the Director of People, Culture & Operations to ensure payroll and benefits accuracy and effective systems.

  • Oversee approximately 4–6 audits annually, including the annual organizational audit and funder-mandated audits.

 

Qualifications

 

  • 10 years of progressive experience in revenue management, philanthropy, and/or nonprofit financial administration, including expertise managing complex revenue lifecycles and compliance requirements.

  • Seven years of progressively senior experience managing finance, accounting, grant management, and fund accounting in a nonprofit environment.

  • Five or more years of experience leading a team.

  • Understanding of feminisms, social justice, and human rights issues affecting women, trans, gender non-binary, and intersex people.

  • Experience leading values-centered financial operations across departments and within multicultural and international environments.

  • Experience working across cultures and time zones in a remote environment.

  • Ability to partner with program and fundraising teams to balance financial stewardship, donor compliance, and operational flexibility.

  • Experience assessing financial and operational risks in international grantmaking, including due diligence, fiscal sponsorship, compliance, and fraud prevention.

  • Ability to balance financial stewardship with movement-centered, trust-based, and values-driven philanthropy.

  • Exceptional written and verbal communication skills, including the ability to translate complex financial information for management, Boards, staff, and community partners.

  • Strong interpersonal, relationship-building, and cross-functional leadership skills.

  • Exceptional quantitative and analytical skills with experience implementing cost-saving measures and developing infrastructure.

  • High degree of discretion, integrity, and executive judgment.

  • Strong people management skills and demonstrated integrity, accountability, empathy, and emotional intelligence.

  • Ability to manage multiple priorities in a fluid, evolving environment.

  • Strong organizational, analytical, and problem-solving skills.

  • Experience leading performance management and continuous feedback processes during periods of organizational transition.

  • Strong digital fluency, including experience selecting and implementing software and managing technology vendors.

  • Experience with QuickBooks Online, Google Workspace, Microsoft products, and Expensify in a Mac environment preferred.

Work Expectations

 

  • Ability to travel domestically and internationally approximately 15% of the time.

  • Remote within the United States, with a preference for candidates able to work during Eastern Time hours.

  • Candidates must live and be authorized to work in the United States.

  • Full-time schedule of 36 hours per week across a 4-day workweek.

 

Compensation & Benefits

 

The annual salary for the position is $165,845. UAF does not negotiate salaries and provides its best offer consistently across candidates.
