Reports To: Controller
Status: Full-time | Exempt
Location: Concord, NH
Position Summary
The Assistant Controller reports to the Controller and serves as a key leader within the Finance department, assisting with all aspects of the accounting and fiscal management of the organization. This position partners closely with the Controller and the CIO/CFO to support effective financial management, strategic decision-making, and continuous improvement of financial systems and processes.
The role ensures the integrity of financial reporting and fulfills internal and external reporting requirements by:
Preparing financial statements in accordance with GAAP
Preparing and reviewing journal entries and account reconciliations
Supporting payroll accounting
Identifying and implementing process improvements
Developing and monitoring internal controls
Essential Job Functions & Responsibilities
Overall Leadership
Directly supervise accounting staff, including assigning and reviewing work, coaching, performance management, and professional development.
Provide leadership, coaching, and training to ensure high performance and adherence to financial and internal control standards.
Prepare and present accurate financial information to staff, senior leadership, and governance committees.
Provide accounting and finance education to staff, management, and nonprofit organizations.
Serve as day-to-day Finance leader in the Controller's absence, coordinating with the CIO/CFO to ensure continuity and appropriate decision-making.
Accounting & Fiscal Management
Perform reconciliations of complex accounts, including investment pools, specially invested assets, and deferred gifts.
Oversee and prepare: 1) General ledger expense allocations; 2) Account reconciliations; 3) Journal entries
Internal control compliance; and 4) Review contribution and grant entries and selected account reconciliations.Support payroll and benefit accounting.
Provide backup support for: 1) Cash receipts; 2) Contribution processing; 3) Accounts payable; and 4) Grants payable
Research, analyze, and respond to internal and external inquiries.
Assist with implementation of FASB, GAAP, tax, and accounting regulations and updates.
Assist the Controller in preparing materials for: 1) Senior Leadership; 2) Audit & Finance Committee; and 3) Board of Directors
File required annual reports with the State of New Hampshire and other regulatory agencies.
Assist with: 1) Annual operating budget; 2) Quarterly budget reforecasts; and 3) Budget-to-actual variance monitoring
Prepare financial statements and support federal and state tax compliance.
Prepare and review workpapers for: 1) Annual external audit; and 2) Tax return preparation
Assist with preparation of Forms 990 and 990-T in partnership with tax advisors.
Provide excellent customer service by explaining accounting policies and procedures to staff, donors, fund holders, and nonprofit organizations.
Finance Systems & Process Improvement
Work closely with IT, the Controller, and CIO/CFO on finance technology and accounting software.
Support staff training and coordinate with vendors and programmers.
Develop reports, workflows, and automated processes.
Identify and implement process improvements to increase automation, efficiency, and scalability.
Develop dashboards and reporting tools in collaboration with Finance leadership.

Job Characteristics
Shared office environment in Concord, NH.
Extended computer work.
Limited evening and weekend work as needed.
Occasional travel throughout New Hampshire.
Occasional overnight travel for conferences.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Accounting or a related field preferred, or an equivalent combination of education and experience.
Minimum of 10 years of progressively responsible accounting and leadership experience.
CPA or CMA preferred.
Strong knowledge of: 1) GAAP; 2) Internal controls; 3) Nonprofit accounting; and 4) Tax regulations
Advanced proficiency with: 1) Microsoft Office; 2) Advanced Excel; and 3) Accounting software
Experience with Power BI, SQL, data management, and software implementation strongly preferred.
Valid driver's license.
