Job Summary

 

The ARL director, Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) provides strategic leadership for and day-to-day management of the Association’s DEI programs and initiatives; this position contributes to the development of an Association culture that advances the ARL values, mission, vision, and code of conduct. In formulating strategies and implementing actions in support of the Association’s priorities, the director works closely with the chair and vice-chair of the ARL DEI Committee (DEIC) along with the Leadership & Transformation team as well as many additional members of the ARL community.

 

Anticipated Salary

 

US$135,000

 

Travel

 

This position requires occasional travel (estimated 20%) within Canada and the United States for meetings of the ARL Board of Directors, membership, and staff; Leadership & Transformation programs and offerings; and relevant conferences and workshops.

 

Supervisory Responsibilities

 

The position has no direct reports. The position supports and/or manages Association committees, task forces, and working groups as well as consultants and grant-funded work.

 

Physical Demands

 

This job is mostly stationary. The individual operates a computer and other office equipment as well as utilizes various remote and virtual engagement software.

 

During in-person programming, staff roles may require extended periods of standing and movement, lifting and carrying of objects, and other physical activities related to the implementation of the events.

 

Required Education

 

Master’s degree—preferably with coursework centered on DEI, social identities, interpersonal systems, leadership, and/or social change

 

ARL may consider candidates with 10+ years of directly related, post-baccalaureate, full-time experience in lieu of a master’s degree.

 

Essential Functions

 

This position is responsible for:

 

  • Serving as a subject-matter expert to the Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion Committee (DEIC), membership, and ARL staff on issues related to DEI

  • Staffing the ARL DEIC: 1) In consultation with the committee chair and vice-chair, develop and implement the program strategy and plan; 2) Develop the budget; 3) Participate in and contribute to all committee meetings; and 4) Support the preparation of agendas, minutes, and delivery of action items

  • Leading the ARL Kaleidoscope Program

  • Leading the ARL Leadership & Career Development Program

  • Leading relevant components of ARL events, including conferences, meetings, and institutes

  • Supporting ARL Leadership & Transformation programs and offerings including: 1) Leadership Fellows Program; 2) Intensive Learning Program; and 3) ARL Institutes

  • Informing and, as appropriate, shaping peer learning through the design and delivery of member-driven programming

  • Other duties as assigned in support of ARL and its mission

  • Providing engaging, intentional, and impactful DEI-focused learning experiences to support learners in translating commitments into action

  • Advocating for more just and inclusive environments using intersectional, asset-based, community-engaged approaches

  • Leading educational and developmental experiences for a variety of audiences—especially executive and senior-level leaders

  • Supporting leaders in identifying organizational needs and opportunities to maintain and advance DEI—and developing related strategies and action plans

  • Working with diverse communities of stakeholders

About the Position

 

The Association of Research Libraries (ARL) is a member-institution community of research-intensive libraries and archives in Canada and the United States. This position will be held by a passionate and experienced individual with a proven track record of effectively working with senior and executive leaders to further develop their skills and competencies and to create innovative, healthy, diverse, equitable, and inclusive organizations.


As part of the ARL staff—and in consultation with the Association’s Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Committee—the incumbent is responsible for actively contributing to the design, delivery, and assessment of all of ARL’s Leadership & Transformation programs and initiatives; providing tools and resources to advance the Association’s goals; and operationalizing efforts to actualize and measure the Association’s impact related to DEI. This is a unique role for someone looking to make a difference in leading and shaping the research library profession. The director will contribute to development of the next phase of the Association’s work to actualize its vision and mission.
